An art hotel. A place where the impossible becomes possible, where there is always something new to discover, where borders are constantly reinvented. In collaboration with artists and art students from the University of Vienna, Jean Nouvel has turned a creative vision – life in the midst of an artwork – into reality.
Ideas from many young talents have been brought together, and the result is something totally unique. Discover a hotel like no other.
Jean Nouvel – architect or artist? In any case, a genius in his field. The Pritzker Prize winner is responsible for some of the most spectacular buildings in the world, including the Arab World Institute and Fondation Cartier in Paris, and the Opéra in Lyon. His recent projects include the 142-meter-high Torre Agbar in Barcelona and the Guggenheim museums in Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro.
For Nouvel, a hotel is much more than a temporary home. It is an adventure for the mind.
Swiss video artist Pipilotti Rist offers an exciting contrast to Nouvel’s minimalist architecture. Her illuminated ceilings with their powerful, bright colors and constantly changing lights and multimedia invite you to lose yourself in a voyage of contemplation and discovery.
Specially developed LED lamps, inspired by the magical world of flora and fauna, cast a fascinating glow. On the 5th floor, an impressive kaleidoscope of mirrors is yet another striking example of Rist’s artistic talent.
French botanist and horticulturist Patrick Blanc has been immortalized at Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom. After completing numerous installations around the world, Blanc has created a so-called “Green Wall” – a living wall of plants which extends 600 square meters over the entire glass wall at the back of the hotel.
Twenty thousand plants of a variety of species come together in this living artwork that changes with the seasons. Special light from 74 powerful lamps enables the Green Wall to flourish indoors.
